REGULATIONS
During production, companies need to adhere and comply to certain rules and regulations. It is very important to research this during pre-production as if these rules are not followed the production could seize to operate and the company might have to pay a fine.
COPYRIGHT
Copyright is the legal right that protects the use of your work once your idea has been physically expressed over a specific amount of time. An example of this would be if a film wanted to use a song they would need permission from the creator of that song.
CLEARANCES
Media companies have to go through several clearances in order to produce a media text. This will tend to include getting permission to use material that isn't the producers, getting releases from anyone appearing in the film and getting permission to use any locations the producers wish to film at
HEALTH AND SAFETY
Companies have to have certain health and safety measures in place in order for people of the production to stay safe from accidents and injuries. If there is no proper procedure in place and people get hurt they can sue the company which can be very costly.

Ofcom is the regulator for the communications services to make sure people get the best out of their experiences. They also protect people from scams and bad practices.
The British Board of Film Classification regulates film. They examine and age rate films before they are released. They also rate other films and can adjust them to what they think is appropriate.

EXAMPLES

The Independent Press Standards Organisation is a regulator for the magazine/newspaper industry. They have the power to penalise companies if they do not adhere to practices.

The Mechanical-Copyright Protection Society pays royalties to its members when their music is used in TV or film
