A script is a written text for a form of digital media

What are the types of digital scripts?

Film, TV, radio, video games

What is the purpose?

Gives the cast and crew a layout and storyline for shoot so it runs smoothly.

Wes Craven's 'A Nightmare on Elm Street'

This is an example from the horror classic 'A Nightmare on Elm Street.' In the opening scene there is lots of action, description and sound to grasp the genre of the film. It makes the atmosphere tense and is engaging from the outset. This 'on-the-edge-of-your-seat' nature of the script will have convinced actors to take the role making the casting process easier.

 

Conventions of a film script include the scene heading to show where and when the scene is taking place, transitions, characters, dialogue and parenthetical's to show character emotion.

My own script from the short film 'Curfew' made with Celtx

This script is an example from the short film 'Curfew' that I wrote using Celtx. In this script, there is more dialogue in the opening, mostly from one person, to show the desperation of the women and allow the audience to understand what is happening. There is also lots of description about 'Richie' self harming to evoke sympathy from the audience and the actors reading the script.

Conventions of a short film are generally the same but there is only one storyline to follow, and a lot less characters (only three in this case.)

These two scripts are examples from radio, one being an advert from a product and another an advert about terrorism. They both have different conventions. The script about 'Flash' uses persuasive techniques and works in synergy with the tune of Queen's 'Flash'. This provokes a sense of nostalgia for the older target audiences and convinces them to buy the product. The other advert presents the issues with terrorism and uses emotive language to show what happens if people don't act on it.

Using Celtx, I created my own re-branded advert for Heinz, changing the slogan and creating my own jingle. This follows the conventions of a radio advert whilst also including a voice over to promote the product. I included persuasive techniques such as '20% off all Heinz products with 30% off soup' to convince my target audience to buy the products. My target audience would be people looking for food deals over Christmas such as parents or people struggling with money.
